Day 16: February 14
The thought for today is GRATITUDE.
I sometimes do spiritual counseling with individuals who feel down on life, frustrated, angry, depressed, and alone. They feel as though everything is working against them. Nothing could be further from the Truth, of course, for the Universe is always conspiring on our behalf. It is God’s perfect pleasure to give us the Kingdom. However, this misperception of life affects the way they deal with other people around them and the emotions they feel about life in general get played out in their relationships. They become confrontational, cynical, greedy, and jealous, among other things.
One of the exercises I have them do is centered on gratitude. Each night as they lay in bed, I tell them, say “thank you” for everything in their life they can possibly think of. “Thank You for the bed supporting me and the warm blanket covering me. Thank You for my parents. Thank You for each breath I take. Thank You for the beating of my heart. Thank You for the job I have. Thank You for my children. Thank You for…” You get the point. I also have them do it when they first wake in the morning before they even get out of bed. More than just saying “thank You,” I want them to make it personal. “Thank You for my job because…” “Thank You for my children because…”
It’s amazing to watch them as they begin to discover how much abundance they live in and how much they have been blessed with already. Life suddenly doesn’t seem so unfair. In fact, they begin to approach life with a lighter heart and smiles on their faces. The relationships in their lives improve. The way they approach their jobs improve. They become a more Peaceful people. The power of gratitude is transformative.
Try it. See what a difference it makes in your life.
Today, I will say “thank You” for all everything in my life, including the blessings I am aware of and the ‘blessings in disguise’ that may seem like challenges to me at the moment. I will take time to reflect on these things and why they are meaningful to me and share my experiences and observations with others. I will write a “thank you” note to someone who least expects it. I will start a gratitude journal today and write about how the ‘attitude of gratitude’ is transforming my life.
